The 2013 boating season kicked off in Mississauga last week with the annual Susan Hood Trophy race.
The yachtsmen faced a grueling course mixed with bad weather, including thunderstorms, heavy winds, and rain. They persevered through it all, and sailed the 73 nautical mile race course that follows along the north shore of Lake Ontario to the Hamilton/Niagara region and then back to Port Credit.
The race was first held in 1955 at the Port Credit Yacht Club, and is named after long time club member and supporter Doug Hood. In its first year, the race attracted just 25 boats, but it has since grown to include 95 crews in eight classes.
Each boat had a full team of crew members, many of whom wore T-Shirts and uniforms which had been produced by local printing companies. It was important that they were dressed for any weather condition they might encounter.
The Susan Hood race is considered to be a good chance for the yachtsmen to polish their skills after the long winter, and it makes an excellent warm up to the Lake Ontario 300. This race is much longer, and follows the entire perimeter of the Lake. The Lake Ontario 300 race is also organized and sponsored by the Port Credit Yacht Club, and the 300 km course is considered to be one of the most exciting and challenging of the Great Lakes. This summer’s race is scheduled to start on July 13th.Get a Free Quote for T-Shirts
