Pearson Airport showcases work of areas artists

Taking a minute to enjoy a work of art can be a pleasant break in the day of a weary traveller, and at Mississauga’s Pearson International Airport, they are now treated to some that’s world class.

The site sees over 33 million people a year use its facilities and travel its corridors. For many of them, this pause to peruse the artwork both refreshes and makes them think.

All of the artistic displays are coordinated by curator Lee Petrie, who ensures that each of the facility’s six separate exhibition spaces are filled with compelling pieces of art on a rotating basis.

The exhibits are spread across the two terminals, and currently feature works that have been created by artists from the Greater Toronto Area with a theme of ‘travel’. There is also a compelling display by Tazeen Qayyum, who took one of the airport’s benches and turned it into an colorful object of beauty.

Plans for the future include displays that are affiliated with the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and the Contact Photography Festival.

As people spend more time in the airport while waiting for connecting flights, the calming effect of the art will likely be appreciated. Print companies can provide printed information about each of the artists and their displays.

Plans have been developed for a relaxation lounge in the US departures hall. This will provide the public with a place to unwind while surrounded by artwork. There will even be a kids’ area where younger travelers can burn off some energy.
