Property tax assessments for Mississauga will be going out a little earlier than usual this year.
At a recent meeting of city council, the municipal property assessment corporation (MPAC) made the announcement that the assessments would be sent out to those who own their own homes starting in mid to late May.
Though some may be worried that this could mean that taxes will be going up, according to Connie Mesih, who is the city’s Director of Material Management, this is not the case. In a press release, she noted that tax rates can be adjusted so that they offset the changes in assessment values.
MPAC will be responsible for conducting all of these assessments for the whole of the province of Ontario this year, with the values being used to calculate the property taxes for 2017 to 2020. Mesih remarked that if a homeowner’s numbers rise at a rate that is similar to the average for the city, any tax hike will be minimal. Letterheads can be used in situations like this to send out the final valuations to the public, and the mailings can include Brochures that explain how the process works.
The valuation of a property is based on the value of similar ones that have been sold in a certain area. Further details can be found on the City of Mississauga’s website.
