Katherine Sencio, a 25-year volunteer with the Knyahynia Olha chapter of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada, was surprised when her peers presented the medal to her during the association’s annual general meeting. Dipika Dameria, MPP for the riding of Mississauga East-Cooksville, was on hand to present the medal. She said:
"She is the woman in the front lines helping people out with their challenge. She is the person who convinces the young and the old to become part of the association in order to enrich the Ukrainian heritage."
Sencio also contributes as a Sunday School Teacher at Toronto’s St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.
With images captured by the media at many of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal ceremonies, the importance of banner printing by the nominating associations is apparent. Retractable or pop-up Banners as photo opportunity backdrops are a critical piece of PR material.
Another medal was recently awarded to Malik Syed during a presentation at the Islamic Centre of Canada in Mississauga. Senator Salm Ataullahjan shook the hand of Syed, who has lived in Canada for 45 years.
The 70-year-old says serving the community is something her whole family is passionate about.
"Forty-five years of my Canadian life I have been serving the community."
Syed is a trained teacher and volunteer who serves Muslim senior citizens and visits the elderly in hospital.
