Helping hands sought for Mississauga environmental project

Electrofishing is method of capturing fish so that data can be collected for scientific study. It causes no long term harm to the organisms being studied, and this technique will be used as part of a project that will be undertaken along Mississauga’s Credit River.

Credit Valley Conservation is seeking volunteers to help out during its electrofishing fish study project. There are over 80 species that call the watershed home, and these amateur scientists will be playing an important role in their long-term survival.

While the group performs its various tasks, the volunteers will have a chance to learn about the various habitats the river has to offer the fish that call it home. They will be taught how to identify the more common species, and the polarized sunglasses and hip waders needed to undertake the work will be provided.

Those who register to volunteer for the morning are asked to remember to bring along snacks, a bottle of water, insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat. They are also reminded to wear clothing that is both light and easy to move in. They may be asked to sign a waiver, and Stationery printers can supply these types of printed business Forms.

The exact location where this project will be taking place will be revealed upon registration. August 1 has been set as the date for the event.
