Giant pandas destined for Toronto zoo

On March 25, a Fed Ex plane carrying two of Canada’s newest citizens arrived at Pearson International Airport. The newcomers are rare giant pandas set for a new life at the Toronto Zoo.

Members of the local and national media were there to greet new arrivals after their 18-hour trip, along with Toronto’s mayor, Prime Minster Steven Harper, and 100 members of ‘Fed Ex Team Panda’. A high school marching band form Ottawa that was the winner of a contest to play for the ceremony gave a rousing welcome. Banners produced by Print companies lent a very festive atmosphere to the event.

The bears exited the Fed Ex cargo plane in good health, and it is reported that they ate over 400 pounds of apples and bamboo during their voyage. The Prime Minister signed for the delivery, and remarked that it was a very special occasion, as it has been over 20 years since Canada has had the opportunity to host pandas in one of its zoos.

The pandas will spend the next 30 days in mandatory quarantine at the zoo. It is hoped that they will be able to breed and increase the numbers of this endangered animal. Should any offspring be produced, the cub and parents will be returned to China to help ensure the long term survival of this beautiful creature.

The Chinese ambassador was present at the ceremony, and he noted that he hopes the gift will help to further cement the friendship between China and Canada.
