Seniors in Mississauga and the surrounding areas were recently given the opportunity to learn more about how to protect themselves from financial abuse.
The Peel Elder Abuse Prevention Network (PEAPN) and the Canadian Association of Retiring Persons (CARP) teamed up to put together the Money Smarts for Seniors Expo.
It was the second year that this event has been held. Those who came out to participate were given lots of information to help them learn about the growing problem of financial abuse among older adults, and also what they can do to protect themselves and their assets form being exploited.
According to the PEAPN, the event was a success because it gave people the information they need to protect themselves and to make wise decisions about their finances. It was also noted that all too often, it is a senior’s own family or friends who may be taking advantage of them. Brochure printers can create materials to be given out to members of the public, for them to peruse at home for more information and helpful advice.
Funding for the expo was provided, in part, by a grant program from the Ontario Senior’s Secretariat. Nearly 50 different groups, as well as government representatives, were on hand to share their knowledge and advice with the crowd. According to the event’s organizers, it was attended by many people in the community.
