The first annual Port Credit Comedy Festival was deemed a success by both organizers and audiences.
Six world class comics entertained the crowds at two local venues, and executive producer Phil LeConte compared the event with the extremely popular Just for Laughs Comedy Festival and the UpTown Waterloo Comedy Festival.
The host for the festival’s opening night gala on Thursday Febuary 28th was none other than Steve Patterson, who presents the very popular CBC radio show ‘The Debaters’. Other award winning comics who featured throughout the festival’s three day schedule included Debra GiGiovnai, Pete Zedlacher, Ryan Belleville, Graham Chittenden, Nile Seguin, and Rob Pue. The line-up consistently had the shows’ audiences in stitches.
Events like this are known to provide a boost to the local economy, simply by attracting people to the area. Print companies are often called upon to produce promotional materials to raise awareness amongst the community.
Food and merchandise at the festival were provided by local merchants and residents of Mississauga were hired to staff the event. This year, the festival had 10 local sponsors, but it is hoped that this number will grow as the festival develops in the future.
As well as boosting the Mississauga economy, the event also helped some local charities. Revellers were encouraged to donate non-perishable items to the food bank collections stationed at the venue doors. Flyer printing may have been used to remind attendees to check their cupboards for surplus items before leaving home.
