Upcoming event to celebrate diversity

The annual Many Faces of Markham celebration is taking place next month in the city, presented by the City of Markham and the Markham Race Relations Committee

This event is held to celebrate the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is now in its 21st year.

The theme for this year's event is ‘Aboriginal Celebrations: Voices from the Past, Present and Future’. The master of ceremonies will be Sid Bobb, formerly of CBC-TV, and it is set to feature several cultural displays, speeches, and performances that will most likely include aboriginal dances and music.

During the event, the winners of the art, video and writing contests will be recognized with a display and the presentation of awards in each category. The contest was for students from Kindergarten up to Grade 8, and the deadline for submission was on February 5.

To advertise the celebration, a poster has been distributed throughout the Markham area. This was no doubt printed and possibly designed by a local poster printing company.

The celebration will be held at the Flato Markham Theatre on March 20 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. To find out more about this event, or about the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, contact Laura Gold at 905-477-7000 x4930 or visit the Markham.ca website.
