Markham will be holding a special Bird Walk this September, looking to showcase native species before they make the journey south for the winter.
The event is held in honour of World Migratory Bird Day. The walk will be led by Simone Granieri, who is a Community Outreach Coordinator with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Granieri will be teaching participants how to identify different bird species, both those coming and going to the Markham area with the change of seasons, with the help of field guides and birding apps.
The tour will also highlight what the city of Markham is doing to become more bird-friendly and encourage a diverse ecosystem. Attendees are encouraged to bring their binoculars and dress appropriately for the weather, including hiking boots and long sleeves and pants. Markham’s Rogue National Urban Park is a hotspot for local birding communities.
This year’s Bird Walk will feature the theme of “Every Bird Counts, Your Observations Matter”. World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated with different events around the world, and is sponsored by environmental organizations like the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. Environmental events like this often use flyer printing and other supplemental material to provide education.
The 2026 Bird Walk will take place at Rogue National Urban Park in Markham on the morning of September 12.
