Badminton elite to play in Markham

After a successful debut in the city last year, international badminton’s Canada Open is returning to Markham this summer for a week of competitive action and celebration.

The tournament is a Super 300 event on the BWF World Tour, and it is one of the biggest tournaments in the Americas. The tournament will feature single-elimination knockout brackets for both singles and doubles, as well as a mixed doubles competition. Last year’s singles tournaments were won by Japanese stars Kenta Nishimoto and Manami Suizu, with Canadian aces Victor Lai and Michelle Li making deep runs.

The Canada Open will also have a special community event to celebrate Canada Day. The free afternoon event will include children’s activities like games, crafts, and face-painting, as well as food like ice cream, candy floss and popcorn. There will also be an open outdoor badminton court and racquets for people to try the game out themselves, with Canadian national team coach Mike Butler on hand for guidance.

The tournament week will be preceded by a Badminton Business Summit, a one-day event that brings together people in sports business for networking and skill development. Visitors to event like this often use resume and business card printing for preparation.

The 2026 BWF Canada Open will take place at the Markham Pan Am Centre from June 30 to July 5.
