The Ontario government has approved an extension of York University to be built in Markham, according to recent sources.
The land that will house the new campus was donated by the city. York University and York Region will be contributing a total of $70m for the construction.
According to a representative from the Ministry of Colleges, Training and Universities, the funding from the province will be finalized following the full collation of data for the project.
The campus will be located near Unionville GO station, north of the intersection of Highway 407 and Kennedy Road.
Approximately 4000 students will be attending the new campus location. Students will have the opportunity to study in eight different fields, with media, arts, liberal arts, information technology, education, business and environmental studies all options. Programs will be offered in combination with Seneca College courses.
It is estimated that by 2036, the population of 18-21 year olds in the York Region will increase by 175,000, thus making the city an ideal location for a new campus.
The campus won over other requests submitted to the province, including Wilfrid Laurier University.
Brochure printing can benefit new post-secondary institutions by sending out course and program information to potential students interested in attending.
The date of construction has not been set as of yet, according to CP24.com
