Markham gets temporary relief from storm damages to assist in yearly budget

Ontario’s Ice Storm Assistance Program will be offering Markham a $2.48m interim payment to help in damages that were sustained in the December 2013 storm, according to sources.

The program offers disaster relief cash to municipalities and conservation land across Ontario that were affected by the adverse weather. The interim payment will be supporting the planning of budget costs.

The program assists with the costs of setting up emergency response facilities and aid, as well as cleaning up debris and damage as a direct result of the storm.

Funding does not support the replacement of insurable objects, the replanting of trees, or tree canopy repairs.

Officials from Markham estimated the cost in damages to be under $10m. That amount changed later in the year.

Liberal MPP of Markham-Unionville commented:

“Our community was significantly impacted by this severe weather event and I am proud of our government’s commitment to support municipalities by reimbursing 100 per cent of eligible response and recovery costs.”

Once the finalization of each of the 56 municipalities’ claims are complete and all entitled costs are confirmed, the outstanding funds will be sent.
