Residents of Markham who would like to become environmental stewards may want to make sure their name is on the list of volunteers participating in a full day of hikes and other activities.
Organized by the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust, the event, which has been dubbed ‘BioBlitz’ will include at least 11 hikes, each of which will be focused on a particular topic. Those who are interested can sign up for as many as they wish, and part of the learning will include tips for how to identify the species they encounter and any other observations they make. This can be useful information for researchers and other scientists who study the area’s ecosystems.
The morning will open at 6:30 am with an advanced session of Birding by Sound. This will be followed by Birding 101. The next hike will be focused on fungi, and an advanced plants session will be taking place at the same time. A family walk will round out the morning, and then it will be time for lunch.
The hikes will continue throughout the afternoon, and these will shine a spotlight on spiders and other arachnids. More family walks will be on offer, and in the evening, there will be a spider survey and introduction to the bats and owls that call the local forest home. Record sheets will make it easy for these amateur naturalists to record their observations, and these can be crafted by Stationery printers.
This day of grassroots environmental action will be taking place on August 17, and the exact location will be released to each applicant upon registration.
