University football championship headed to London

Canada’s premier university football event will arrive in London this November, as the Vanier Cup will see the country’s best teams square off on the gridiron.

The Vanier Cup is the national championship of U Sports football, which features dozens of teams from prestigious universities across Canada. This year’s championship game is hosted by London’s Western University, whose Mustangs football team competes in the OUA conference and could qualify for the championship.

The Mustangs have been one of the top teams in U Sports over the past decade and won last year’s Vanier Cup, their 8th total trophy across the 56 years of the competition. The contenders will be determined by the Mitchell and Uteck Bowls, which involve the champions of U Sports’ four conferences.

The game will be accompanied by a Fan Fest held outside of Western Alumni Stadium, which is open to ticket holders. It will also include a musical halftime show, with artists to be announced. Organizers have stressed their efforts to provide family-friendly ticket prices, including collaborations with the City of London and Tourism London. Football bowl games like this, both in Canada and the United States, typically feature a lot of spectacle, ranging from colourful banner printing to big-name entertainment acts.

The 2022 Vanier Cup game will be held on November 26 at the Western Alumni Stadium.
