A 19th century London museum will be offering visitors a chance to step back in time this December and experience a Victorian-era Christmas.
Eldon House’s tours will offer a unique and intimate experience designed for groups of four to six people from the same household. It will feature costumed historical interpreters who provide information on how the holidays were celebrated in the 19th century, including the Victorian tradition of Christmas ghost stories and the origins of Holiday Cards and other festive Stationery printing.
As with the other tours and events at Eldon House, it will provide visitors a chance to sample Regency and Georgian architecture and decoration that has been largely unchanged since the house’s creation.
Eldon House will also be hosting a craft seminar inspired by Victorian tradition through its Interpretive Centre. Participants will create their own Kissing Ball, an orb decorated with cedar and holly berries. These balls were popular during England in the 19th century as an alternative to mistletoe, which had to be imported and was expensive. The workshop will be conducted by Program Coordinator Brenna Ardiel.
The holiday programs at Eldon House will be available for bookings from December 11th to the 20th, with the Kissing Ball Workshop taking place on the morning of the 12th. Programs may be moved online if social distancing regulations change.
