London symphony to open season

The London Symphonia will be launching a new season this October with a bravura opening concert featuring some of Canada’s top classical musicians and the works of major composers.

The symphony’s opening night will be headlined by acclaimed pianist David Jalbert performing classical work, including Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major. The concert will also look to shine a light on some lesser-known composers with presentations of Augusta Holmes’ La Nuit et l’Amour and Rodrigo Prats’ Contra el Carreto Cuando Dan Las Seis.

This performance will also mark the London Symphonia debut of guest conductor Maestra Cosette Justo Valdés. The Cuban-born Valdes is promoted as a rising star in the classical world. The symphony also contains dozens of musicians playing instruments ranging from violin to harp, presenting a full symphonic sound.

The show is the first of eight concerts planned by the Symphonia for its 2025-26 season, each with different guests and musical themes. There will also be a dress rehearsal for the concert hosted the day before the show, including a speech by the symphony’s Composer-in-Residence Scott Good. Classical concerts like this typically use methods like brochure printing and speeches to help provide context on the works and the people performing them.

London Symphonia’s “Opening Night: Mozart, Ravel and Beyond” will take place at the Metropolitan United Church on October 4.
