London to house pioneering clinic

London Health Sciences Foundation (LHSF) will soon be home to a genetic diagnostics clinic, the first of its kind to be based in Canada.

Genetic diagnostics uses DNA information to personalize medical treatment to suit a specific patient. This method has been used to treat conditions ranging from cancer and neuromuscular disorders to epilepsy and developmental disabilities.

The London-based centre will be called the Archie and Irene Verspeeten Clinical Genome Centre, after the couple whose $3 million donation made its creation possible. The facility will look to both deliver treatments to LHSF patients and conduct scientific experiments to help develop new solutions.

The centre will begin its research by focusing on genomic sequencing for cancer of the pancreas, working together with the Baker Centre for Pancreatic Cancer to help develop treatments and diagnostics. Centres like this can allow researchers and technicians to come together, exchanging knowledge and sometimes Business Cards.

The centre’s Scientific and Clinical Director, Bekim Sadikovic, stressed the potential of the new institution:

“This Verspeeten Clinical Genome Centre will have the ability to bring us closer to transforming fast-spreading and fatal cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, into manageable diseases and the research and knowledge gained through genomic profiling will provide valuable information that will benefit patients now and in the future.”

The new clinic was announced on October 14, and will receive a $10 million investment for its upcoming construction.
