The Grand Theatre, one of London’s most popular venues for live drama, is currently closed for renovations, but it is looking to raise funds through a livestreamed concert.
The concert, called “Dramatic Pause”, is being put together by theatre students from the University of Western Ontario. It will feature performances by the classically trained, Markham-born singer Sam Dominique, the four-man group Fox the Hound and Canadian Folk Music Award nominee John Muirhead.
Livestreamed concerts like this, often advertised through tools like flyer printing and social media, have become a popular way to support local venues and art organizations.
The event will also feature a silent auction component, with items supplied by local businesses. All proceeds from both virtual ticket sales and the auction will go to the Grand Theatre’s youth programs. While it is unable to hold shows, the theatre has been undergoing a series of renovations, including the installation of a new floor and enhancements to dressing rooms.
The Grand Theatre has adapted by creating online content like the Grand Walks podcast and a livestreamed performance titled “Un-Opening Night”. Once the theatre is ready to reopen, one of its first projects will be the original musical “Grow”, which the theatre released a one-song teaser for earlier this year.
Dramatic Pause will be livestreamed on the evening of March 6.
