London hockey team set to return to the ice

The Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) London Knights will finally return to play this October after a missed season.

The team will be playing a full 68-game season, and up to 1,000 season ticket holders will be allowed into the stands to cheer the team on. As the 2021-22 season was canceled for social distancing reasons, the Knights will have a new look, with many players aging out of the junior division.

The newcomers include top draft pick Denver Barkey, Estonian defenceman Kirill Steklov and goalkeeper Mathias Onuska. This OHL season will also mark the start of a new broadcast contract, which will see some games available to all through the CBC and its streaming platforms.

The Knights will kick off the season with a home game against the Owen Sound Attack, before returning the favour with an away game in Owen Sound the next day. The regular season is set to run until March, to be followed by a playoff between the top teams.

As in previous years, the OHL champion will challenge for the 2022 Memorial Cup, which will be hosted by a team to be determined from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Junior hockey is popular across Canadian cities and towns, and it is often rooted in the community at every stage, from the drives to early morning practices to championship banner printing.

The London Knights will kick off their season on October 7 and will play all home games at Budweiser Gardens.
