London duo makes a splash with Brokini

An unusual clothing item from a pair of London-born fashion designers has received coverage on sites like Buzzfeed, the Toronto Sun and City News within the last two weeks.

Billed as “the perfect swimwear to make your parents question where they went wrong”, the Brokini adds an over-the-shoulder sling to a tight pair of trunks, creating a look resembling a leotard or a wrestling singlet.

The product, made out of polyester and spandex, is created by high-school friends Chad Sasko and Taylor Field. Speaking to GlobalNews.ca at the end of last month, they describe it as the product of college and bachelor parties where attendees would attempt to one-up each other with outrageous attire.

Launched last year, the Brokini has been greeted with laughter and raised eyebrows, but sometimes with genuine interest. Sasko and Field report selling just a handful over the first few weeks they opened the online store, but a recent spate of press coverage has led to them selling out their initial inventory.

Irreverent marketing, such as humorous slogans and goofy Logo Design or the fake “reviews” on the Brokini’s website from concerned loved ones, can make unlikely products attractive as gag gifts or fun costumes. Even the pair, however, have been surprised at the product’s success, stating they initially intended to sell only a few to friends.

Sasko and Field are currently selling the Brokini online in two patterns: Bromingo and Fineapple, and look to add additional sizes.
