London basketball squad to return to play

The London Lightning basketball squad is set to return to the court for the first time in two years this February as the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC) resumes play.

The Lightning, the only founding member of the NBLC to still be playing in its original home, will be playing against the three Ontario-based teams: the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans, Sudbury Five and Windsor Express. The league’s two Atlantic-based teams will not be participating in this season, but the NBLC will be partnering with the US-based The Basketball League for match-ups against teams such as the Albany Patoons, Kokomo Bobkats, and Syracuse Stallions. The teams will play a 24-game season culminating in a playoff.

The 2022 season will mark the 10-year anniversary of the NBLC’s founding. The Lightning has been the most dominant team in the league’s short history, winning four championships. The team has announced the return of coach Doug Plumb and players Jaylon Tate and Mareik Isom, as well as the addition of Canadian forward Jordan Jensen-Whyte.

Local and regional leagues like this, typically promoted through flyer printing and local media, provide people in smaller cities a way to see developing players and the atmosphere of a pro ball game.

The London Lightning season is scheduled to begin with a match against the Sudbury Five on February 5, with the regular season running until April 28.
