London’s premier film festival has announced its award winners for 2020, the first year the festival has used a virtual format.
The Forest City Film Festival took the form of online screenings over the course of two weeks, with videos available to spectators across Canada. The award for Best Feature Film went to The Cuban, a narrative about the relationship between a nurse and an elderly musician that was shot in nearby Brantford.
The Walrus and the Whistleblower, about an ex-trainer at MarineLand in Niagara Falls who became involved in a dispute with the iconic attraction, won Best Feature Documentary. There were also a number of categories for short films, including documentaries and animations.
New to the festival this year was a category for music videos. Another new feature this year was “Up Close Conversations”, a series of interviews with filmmakers, actors and other industry figures that were broadcast worldwide. These conversations are set to become another permanent addition.
Festival founder and director Dorothy Downs described the new competition as a success and a way for Forest City to distinguish itself from other film festivals. Smaller film festivals like this typically use tools like poster printing and word-of-mouth to draw in local audiences.
The 2020 Forest City Film Festival took place online between October 18 and 25. Downs has said that future festivals will involve both an online component and in-person theatrical screenings.
