Mental health first aid to be focus of upcoming workshop

This fall, Guelph’s Family and Children’s Services will be hosting an event that will both equip members of the pubic with skills they can use to help someone who is facing a mental health crisis, and also seek to remove some of the stigma that surrounds mental illness.

The two-day workshop will cover an assortment of topics that are related to the health of the mind. There will be a discussion of how a person’s daily life and interactions with others can affect their mental state, and also how to recognize when someone may be in crisis. The training can be used by anyone, whether they are a professional in the field or just want to know how to lend someone a hand.

While the course will not make those who participate therapists, it will give them tools they can use to provide assistance and support until the individual can access professional care. It will run for two days, and both a light morning snack and lunch will be included, as will freshly brewed coffee and tea. A certificate will be given to each person who successfully completes the instruction.

The fee to participate will be $150 each, and the proceeds will be donated to the United Way. Comb binding can be used to craft manuals and other materials for an event like this.

The Mental Health First Aid training will be held staring on October 30. More information can be obtained by contacting the planners through their Facebook page.
