Guelph seeks solution to geese invasion

Canada geese have taken a liking to Guelph, and the city has announced that it will investigate a way to alleviate the problems they can sometimes cause.

City staff have made a recommendation that it develop a formal strategy and hire a consultant to do so. The estimated cost for this is $50,000.

Geese tend to congregate in grassy areas such as parks and other open spaces, and when the place they choose is a sports field, the mess they make can be very unwelcome. They can also become very aggressive towards people they feel are invading their territory, especially when they are nesting.

There are several approaches to dealing with geese that will not harm them but will encourage them to move on. These include changing the landscape to one that will not suit them, to stop feeding them, to put up barriers that make it difficult for them to take off and land, and to relocate the flocks to somewhere that they will not be a nuisance. According to Councilor Leanne Piper, the University of Guelph has developed a geese strategy and may very well have experts in the field that can add their input to the discussion.
