Guelph science organization launches plans for new centre

Royal City Science, a Guelph organization looking to promote science education, has announced its ambition to build a physical science centre to help further its reach to learners.

The organization was founded earlier this year by science educator, performer and physicist Jason “The Great Orbax” Thomas and university teacher and science researcher Joanna O’Meara. Their goal is to create a science centre offering physical exhibitions and educational programs, like those available in Toronto and Ottawa. Centres like this often use colourful brochure printing to give learners of all ages something to take home with them.

The group has joined the Canadian Association of Science Centres and has already received a Canada Post Community Foundation grant. Its first step will be to raise funds and create an online platform called “The Wormhole” to help bring together community members and organize scientific programming and other events.

The physical centre, called “The Nucleus”, will offer a Guelph-based spin on scientific and technological knowledge and how it relates to the broader world. The project is headed by a steering committee of almost 20 members, many from the University of Guelph, with some from groups like Wild Ontario, Ed Video Media Arts Centre and Innovation Guelph.

Royal City Science made its official launch announcement in November, and is currently gathering funds and making connections for future activities and the eventual founding of a physical centre.
