The Guelph community has made it just a bit easier to be a nursing mother, with a new breastfeeding cafe scheduled to open on January 9 at the Guelph Community Health Centre.
The cafe will offer 18-hour sessions on breastfeeding support sponsored by UNICEF and the World Health Organization. At the café, volunteers will be on hand to answer important questions about breastfeeding and new moms can share knowledge about motherhood.
Printing companies could have an important role in helping to promote the new cafe for moms through brochure printing and flyer printing about the medical support available to breastfeeding moms in the Guelph area. The cafe is modeled on a successful endeavor in the Kitchener area called Breastfeeding Buddies, which operates with over 200 volunteers. In both models, mothers have the opportunity to discuss breastfeeding issues openly in a relaxed environment away from medical professionals.
The new cafe is expected to open on January 9, with volunteers on hand from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm and free child care provided to moms on location. Support will be provided in multiple languages and the cafe is being actively promoted by the Guelph Community Health Centre. The cafe is a joint initiative between Guelph General Hospital, public health unit, Guelph Midwives, Guelph Family Team, and the La Leche League of Guelph.
The Guelph Community Centre cafe will meet every Wednesday and is also available to women who have not had children yet - be they attendees or volunteers.
