Guelph farmers market makes return

The Guelph Farmers’ Market will make its return in time for summer this weekend, featuring a new all-outdoors format.

The revamped market will feature 30 vendors and will operate rain or shine. Food vendors which typically use the market include Brantview Apples & Cider, Authentic Turkish Delights & Bakery, and Ponsonby Pies and Treenut Dairy. The space has also played host to various local artisans and bakeries such as Chris Hierlihy Pottery, W.S. Creative Sewing and Jazzz Creations. Many market vendors are also now offering pick-up and delivery services to complement in-person shopping.

The market describes itself as “one of the most active and vibrant Farmers’ Market in Southern Ontario” and has been in existence in some form for 180 years. It traces its root back to Market House, the first building ever planned in Guelph, and despite several moves over the years it has always been at the heart of downtown Guelph.

Traditional farmer’s markets have remained relevant over the years and often use tools like flyer printing to attract visitors. They have remained popular due to interests in eating local foods and supporting small businesses and craftspeople.

The Guelph Farmer’s Market will return on July 4 in the back parking lot of its typical Gordon Street location. It plans to operate on a bi-weekly basis throughout the summer.
