The show is a musical review and will feature a variety of traditional standards and more recent hits reflecting the musical tradition of Canada’s tenth province. Shipyard Kitchen Party is a three-piece band made up of John Eaton, Sacha Law, and Jason Murphy, all of whom have ties to the Maritimes. The trio each perform vocals and play instruments like mandolin, guitars, and the bodhran, and sometimes also feature guest musicians.
The group is also known for its musicals 100 Years From Now and Tom Thompson’s Wake, and will provide the same element of visual staging and musical tradition to the Newfoundland Songbook. The show is on tour throughout Southern Ontario, and will appear in cities like Peterborough and Markham. Musical shows like this typically use poster printing and local radio advertising to help reach potential listeners. Promotional material ties the show to Newfoundland’s distinctive culture:
“From the remote outports to the vibrant city of St. John’s, from the fishing stages to the kitchens and front parlours, you’ll hear the timeless sea-shanties, triumphant ballads and the hilarious foot-stomping sing-a-longs that make Canada’s 10th province its most legendary.”
The Guelph performance of Newfoundland Songbook will take place on the afternoon of October 19 at the River Run Centre.
