City of Guelph calls for Governance changes with Health Board

A funding dispute in the town of Guelph has caused a rift in city councillors’ relationship with the Health Board and funding repercussions. The Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph health board has so far seen three Guelph city councillors remove themselves over funding disputes, leaving the city under-represented.

Councillor Keith Perron continues to ill his obligation as city councillor, although he believes that City Council needs to send representatives to the Board of Health.

Health care is a delicate issue for the community of Guelph, with media coverage and Print companies covering the ongoing fallouts between the city and the Board of Health.

The city has requested that the board of health hire a mediator to develop dispute resolution mechanisms and help establish nonthreatening environments to help resolve outstanding funding issues. They would also like to see administrative officers take over non-health related senior management duties from the Medical officer of Health. According to the city, the governance structure needs to be updated and a cost-sharing program implemented with the municipalities.

Board members were not receptive to changing the makeup or funding model. The city of Guelph currently contributes 12% of its share of the funding from municipalities, with Wellington and Dufferin chipping in less.

The new Guelph headquarters will also cost the city millions of dollars, city council argues. City council will return three councillors to the Board of Health next week to deal with the ongoing public issues.

Print companies will likely become involved in publicizing and covering the ongoing health issues in Guelph.
