Brampton area workshop to make dandelions special

Many people may not realize that the humble dandelion has many uses, and those who are included in a Brampton area workshop may just develop a new appreciation for this common weed.

The event will explore the history of dandelions, including how they came to be so ubiquitous in the GTA. The group will be treated to a taste of dandelion-based pickles and other preserves to help pique their interest, and the participants will then discover how they can make some of these dishes for themselves.

The facilitator for the occasion will discuss how dandelions can be used to prepare a variety of preserved foods and other recipes. There will be a demonstration of jelly-making using the hot water bath method, and this will be followed by a review of the nutritional benefits of eating these plant-based foods.

A big focus of the class will be sustainability. The learners will find out how they can harvest dandelions and other foraged greens using resourceful techniques. Field guides, perhaps showing the species foragers may commonly encounter in their area, can help them to put the theories they learn in a workshop like this into practice, and these can be crafted by a printing services provider.

The Dandelion Variations: Canning Workshop and Conversation session will be offered to the public on August 12 at 1065 Canadian Place in Mississauga.
