Students living in Brampton are invited to apply for one of 30 $1,000 scholarship funds being administered by the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services.
The George Hitchcock Memorial Endowment Fund was created to provide financial support to men and women interested in training to become a firefighter. The bursaries to be awarded this year and used towards the cost of tuition at Humber College.
Successful applicants will live in the city of Brampton, and be Canadian citizens or permitted to work in the country. Students must be enrolled in the two semester Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training certificate program. Course catalogs and Brochures may be available from the college.
The George Hitchcock Memorial Endowment Fund was established in 2014, to honour Hitchcock’s distinguished 33-year career in fire service, and his passion for fire safety and education in fire prevention. The bursary is designed to inspire young adults in the community to pursue firefighting as a career, and ensure future excellence in emergency fire services.
The $31,000 endowment fund was originally established from donations to the cause made by the public. The volume of scholarships awarded varies from one year to the next and may be based on the number of new recruits the fire services estimates it will need in the future.
The deadline to submit applications is April 30, or when the first 30 applications have been submitted. Application Forms are available from the City of Brampton website, on the Fire and Emergency Services homepage.
