Young people and seniors work together for art's sake in New Westminster

The Heart 2 Art Gala took place in New Westminster recently. The gala celebrated and showcased five art projects that were created as part of a collaboration project involving seniors and young people from the area.

The works were in the categories of mosaic, theater, variety performance, spoken word and digital photography. Refreshments were also served during the gala and many people from the community turned out to witness the pieces.

The art projects were sponsored by New West Youth, an organization that provides many social and community events aimed at young people.

The organization has also been receiving nominations for the 2013 New Westminster Youth Awards. These will be presented at a public event in early May. Members of the public had until April 20 to nominate young people in seven categories: Humanitarian, Youth Leadership, Community Service, Performing and Visual Arts, Athletics and Scholarship, Against the Odds and Amazing Advocates.

New Westminster printing companies are thought to be helping organizers by providing marketing materials to highlight the awards. Flyers, for example, might be distributed among the community either by Direct Mail or by being displayed at youth centers throughout the city.

Not only can Flyers and Posters be used to promote the awards event itself, they can also be used to display the entrants’ work; raising the profiles of the talented artists of New Westminster.
