Walk30 Challenge returns to New West

A challenge encouraging New Westminster residents to explore their city and gain local bragging rights has returned for 2021.

The Walk30 Challenge encourages participants to walk for a half-hour each day. The event comes with a digital leader board using the ChallengeRunner mobile app, which lets users track their walks and compare their activity to others. Each minute walked will add to the city total, as part of a challenge between New Westminster and neighbouring Burnaby.

The municipality that logs the most total time will receive the Golden Shoe trophy, which New Westminster has won during the last two editions. The 2018 edition saw 1.2% of New Westminster’s population contributing, walking for over 350,000 minutes.

This year, the challenge was supported by the return of the Jane’s Walks program earlier this month. Named after urban planner Jane Jacobs, the event saw a number of walking routes around the city posted online, encouraging residents to explore new areas of New Westminster. Walk30 has followed in these footsteps by posting routes online under the name “Isabel’s Walks”, including one selected by the mayor.
