Traditional festival to return to New West

New Westminster’s famous Hyack Festival will be returning for another year this spring, featuring a parade and social gathering.

This year’s event is officially recognized as the 52nd Hyack Festival, but the tradition dates back even further to May Day celebrations in the 19th century. The annual festival features traditions such as the Hyack Anvil Battery Salute, which involves placing gunpowder between two anvils as a substitute for the traditional 21-gun salute. There will also be a maypole dance involving local schoolchildren, with elementary school students selected to be the May Queen and members of her Suite and Royal Knights, and the ceremonial rose planting at New Westminster City Hall.

The festival will also include more modern elements of a street festival, with a festival square involving local food trucks, vendors, and live entertainment. These events provide an opportunity to sample local food and products, with vendors often using Business Cards and product samples to connect with customers. Paying guests can also be part of a whole weekend of hospitality events, including a Dinner Banquet, Toga Party and Farewell Breakfast, aimed at professionals looking to network and other special VIPs.

The Hyack Festival will take place between May 26 and 28, with the traditional parade going along 6th Street and concluding at the street festival in Tipperary Park on May 27.
