Rain City Games opens up New West location

One of Vancouver’s favourite tabletop game stores has opened up a new location in New Westminster.

The store offers hundreds of unique board games, card games, puzzles, science kits, and other means of unplugged entertainment. Rain City was originally known as ‘One Stop Shop Cards and Games’, but started under the new name in 2017, when it came under the ownership of Andrea Robertson and Channing Guenther.

The store has flourished in part because of the increased popularity of board games among adults, in part as nostalgia and in part because of the growth of more adult-oriented games. Board game stores and cafes, often advertised through poster printing and flyer printing, have become popular social spots. The games sold at Rainy City range from ribald party games to dense European strategy contests.

The store currently stocks about 1,400 unique items, including 500 to 600 board game titles. According to Robertson and Guenther, popular titles include Codenames, Dragon’s Breath and Coup. The New Westminster location already holds regular events for popular games such as Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: the Gathering, which are intended to be more friendly than competitive. Other events include miniature painting workshops and used game sales.

The New Westminster location of Rain City Games officially towards the end of 2019, and is currently open seven days a week.
