Planting program to return to New Westminster

The long-running Plant a Row – Grow a Row program will return to the New Westminster area this summer, offering residents a chance to try out their green thumbs for a good cause.

The program sees community members grow an additional food row in their gardens and donate it to people in need. Any time of fresh food is accepted, with suggested crops including fruit, herbs, lettuce, potatoes, and tomatoes. Food will be collected weekly by Ryan’s Rainbow Emergency Food Outreach and the New West Union Gospel Mission. The food will be used for cooked meals, fresh food Boxes, and a cook training program. Program founder Claude LeDoux expressed the importance of the community program:
“Without the help of such generous community members, our community members in need, both young and elderly, would be lacking such vital fresh produce. We would like to thank all of our current members and anyone else looking to assist please come.”

Plant A Row – Grow a Row has been running in New West and Burnaby for 25 years, involving experienced local gardeners as well as newcomers. Charity programs like this often use tools like brochure printing to help explain their work. Cash, clothing and kitchenware donations are also welcome.

The 2025 Plant a Row – Grow A Row program collection events will run every Sunday morning from June 8 to October 5 at St. Thomas More Collegiate in Burnaby.
