New Westminster to investigate possibility of off-leash small dog park

The city of New Westminster has made the decision to investigate the feasibility of having a small dog off-leash dog park.

In an effort to determine whether or not such a facility is needed, a section of the off-leash dog park in Queen’s Park has been set aside for this purpose. A temporary fence has been erected, and Signs have been installed that indicate which space is for small dogs only.

This area was chosen as the test park because it is centrally located in is one of the city’s biggest off-leash areas. According to the Manager of the Queen’s Park Annex, Jay Young, many requests for owners of smaller canines have been received that expressed an interest in having an area that was set aside just for them.

The section of park will be for pets weighing 26lb and under, and their owners will be responsible for deciding whether or not it is suitable for them. The test will last until September, at which point the matter will be further investigated and a decision made on whether or not the test will be considered to have been a success.

Dog owners who have used the area and anyone else who would like to share their input is invited to do so by using the survey that has been provided for this purpose on the New Westminster Parks and Recreation website.
