New Westminster takes ownership of theatre

New Westminster’s Massey Theatre is now under city ownership, having been transferred to the municipal government, which has big plans for its future.

The theatre was previously part of New Westminster Secondary School (NWSS), and as such, it was under the ownership of the New Westminster school district. However, with the construction of a new NWSS campus, the old school building is being decommissioned and transformed into an arts centre. The school district sold the theatre and the accompanying land to the city for a nominal price of $1. The centralized art site will also include the Plaskett Gallery and space for art classes and rehearsals.

The transfer also includes areas of historical significance, such as a cemetery used between 1860 and 1920. New Westminster plans to build a park on some of the old school land, with greenery, art and signage playing tribute to the site’s history.

The Massey Theatre has returned to presenting live events and has planned a performance by veteran folk singer Martha Wainwright for November 16 and the British holiday comedy play “O Christmas Tea” the following month. Small and medium-sized theatres like this provide vital space for artists and productions of all levels, often using cost-effective tools like flyer printing and social media to promote events.

Massey Theatre and the surrounding area were transferred to city ownership at the end of September, with renovations to the area expected to be completed in phases over the following three years.
