New Westminster’s Douglas College will be holding the second edition of its DougZine Fest this November, encouraging self-publishing and creativity.
The festival is a celebration of “zines” – amateur miniature magazines, Journals and other publications, which are commonly associated with subcultures and do-it-yourself hobbies. Zines are often created through local printing services with homemade designs and distributed at community events like DougZine Fest.
DougZine Fest will feature over 20 vendors at tables offering their own zines, with applications accepted through an online process open to Douglas College students and other members of the New West community. Visitors can also get a taste of zine-making with a collage creation station, giving them a unique Print work to take home with them. In the past, the event has featured other hands-on activities and featured guest collage artists.
The festival is hosted by and designed to highlight the Douglas College Library Zine Collective, made up of faculty and students promoting the history and production of zines. The college’s library contains a catalogued collection of zines reflecting social issues and subcultures throughout past decades. In addition to the fest, the Collective runs lessons and other events throughout the year.
The 2025 edition of DougZine Fest will take place on the afternoon of November 12 on the Concourse of the Douglas College New Westminster Campus. Attendance is free to all.
