New Westminster poet to edit local anthology

The poet-laureate of New Westminster, British Columbia has released an open call for submissions for a new anthology.

Alan Hill is putting the collection together in partnership with the city’s art services department. Hill describes the anthology as his “legacy project” which will help to celebrate New Westminster’s history and identity, as well as bring together the local arts community.

The anthology will be titled A Journey Across New Westminster by Word: A Poetry of Place. Submissions are to take the form of “poetry Postcards”, short written descriptions (less than 300 words) of a cherished place in the city. Hill is interested in poetry tied specifically to a sense of place and belonging. The project aims to tap into a vibrant, grassroots poetry community in the Vancouver area and beyond. Local poets and fiction writers often use Print shops and self-publishing to put together chapbooks, collections, Journals, and poster printing for readings and other events.

Submissions are due by June 21, and should be submitted as e-mail with a photo image of the described place included. Hill has served as Poet Laureate since 2017, speaking at events like the city’s annual May Day festivities. He is co-manager of the Poetry New West reading series and his work has been published in numerous international Journals and two collections – 'The Upstairs Country' and 'The Broken World'.
