New Westminster parklet a hit

New Westminster’s latest green space, which was recently opened on East Columbia Street in Sapperton, is already attracting a lot of attention.

The “parklet”, which takes up the space formerly occupied by two parking stalls, has cedar benches, a place to rest one’s feet, as well as small shrubs and greenery. Though it just opened, it has already been put to good use by people wanting to have a quiet place to enjoy a coffee and a snack, use their handheld device, or just enjoy a few minutes of rest and relaxation during their busy day.

Social media has spread the word about the parklet, which is just the first one of five that are slated to be built throughout the city during the next five years. This is part of a program intended to create spaces that encourage and develop a sense of community within local neighborhoods. One will be created in Uptown, Downtown, the West End, and Queensborough. A postcard printing company can crate promotional cards that are printed with QR Codes to link the reader to the social media accounts for the parks. This can help to promote them to a wide audience and increase their online presence.

The structures cost approximately $10,000 to $20,000 to design and then build. The city’s engineering department has already included this cost in its budgets for subsequent years.
