The Arts Council of New Westminster (ACNW) is looking for a local creator to take up the role of artist in residence for its gallery in Centennial Lodge, Queen’s Park.
The program is intended to help develop local talent, so no previous experience or reputation in the arts world is needed. The arts council aims to highlight the community’s diversity and has encouraged LGBTQ, Indigenous and disabled artists to apply as well as artists of colour.
The program will allow the artist to use the park’s galley space in whichever way they wish and host a weekly public event. This programming could take the form of performance art, artist talks, readings, live drawing, or whatever else expresses the artist’s creativity.
The artist in residence program is open to anyone living or working in New Westminster. Programs like this are often used to associate a gallery or other institution with a well-known artist, but the ACNW’s choice suggests their connection to the local community. Artists in residence are often featured in gallery marketing such as brochure printing, and help to determine the institution’s artistic direction.
The ACNW will be accepting applications for artist in residence until January 31, 2020, and will make its selection by the end of February. Applicants should include a biography, CV, and plan for public programming.
