New Westminster gearing up for river festival

Riverfest is set to draw large crowds to New Westminster over two days in September. It is part of the BC and World Rivers Day celebration, which takes place across more than 100 communities in British Columbia. Organizers are expecting the event to attract around 10,000 visitors to the area.

Riverfest is held in honor of the Fraser River and is presented by the Fraser River Discovery Centre. There will be plenty of activities on offer over the two days, including live entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, information booths from community and environmental organizations, children's activities, and a scavenger hunt.

In past years, the festival has presented outdoor film screenings, children's character appearances, and parades.

An opening reception will be held on the first evening of the event; artists are encouraged to attend to give members of the public a chance to meet them and learn a bit about the their work.

Art and crafts items of all types will be accepted but should have a theme of rivers and the environment. Vendors and artists can rent a 10x10 foot space for just $25, allowing them to showcase their wares.

New Westminster printing companies will likely be called upon to help many of the artisans prepare for Riverfest. This might include providing Banners for the decoration of a booth or Postcards to be used as promotional items.

Riverfest will take place at the Westminster Key Boardwalk from September 27-28. Admission is free. For more information, call 604-521-9401.
