New Westminster festival to present Indian music

The Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance will be holding its 14th annual edition in Westminster this October, showcasing different elements of musical culture from the subcontinent.

The festival will feature performers from across Canada and India, and aims to be accessible to newcomers. This year’s lineup will include the duo of Hari Pal and Amika Kushwaha, playing tabla and harmonium respectively; the Baljit Singh Ensemble; and mridangam player Keerthy Raghavan Shruti Laya Bhedam accompanied by vocals and violins. Songs will also feature traditional Indian vocal styles like ghazal, khayal and thumri.

The one-night performance will also feature dancers and other performers, all in traditional styles from Indian culture. The festival was created in New Westminster by Cassius Khan and Amika Kushwaha to play tribute to legendary performer and former Vancouver area resident Mushtari Begum, also known as the Ghazal Queen. Past editions of the festival have also included welcome addresses and poetry reading.

This year’s Mushtari Begum Festival will be opening up the Massey Theatre’s 2025-26 season of events. Dance and music festivals like this often use methods like flyer printing and local media advertising to help connect with the community.

The 2025 Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance will take place on the evening of October 4 at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster.
