New Westminster event to showcase Indigenous art
Arts New West will be hosting Welcome to My Renaissance this Canada Day weekend, highlighting the works of local Indigenous artists.
The celebration will begin with a day full of events and workshops. Kung Jaaddee will demonstrate traditional Haida storytelling and music, while Dr. T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss will provide a guided tour of the area with a guide to local plants used for medicine. Visitors can drop in to learn how to create their own bone and bead choke, or listen to a live performance from area singer-songwriter Noreen Braun. Visitors are welcome to bring their own chairs or blankets and enjoy the show.
The day will also mark the opening of the “Welcome to My Renaissance” group exhibition, curated by Bluesky-James Groening. The display will highlight local Indigenous artists, including a special youth showcase within the Centennial Lodge featuring six young creators. Exhibits like this often use visual signs and brochure printing to explain the meaning and inspiration behind the artwork. Promotional material for the exhibit states that:
