New Westminster cyclists called on to test their skills and disaster knowledge

Cycling enthusiasts and others interested in learning more about how they can help in a disaster situation are invited to take part in an upcoming event.

The second annual Amazing Disaster Rally is part of the plans the city has developed for National emergency Preparedness Week. It is to be held in Queen’s Park and will allow 75 bicyclists to follow a 25km route through New Westminster.

Along the way, they will be completing a set of different exercises and activities designed to help test their knowledge of about what to do in a disaster situation, and also how prepared they are for such an event at both a community and personal level. A Print company can provide any signage and other printed material that is needed for such a project.

It is hoped that this will also demonstrate how cyclists may have the ability to access cut-off areas after a catastrophic event, such as an earthquake.

They may be able to get into places that larger vehicles cannot reach, and provide assistance, help move people, and bring information, first aid, emergency supplies, and other items into stricken areas.

Anyone interested in taking part is invited to visit the city’s website for more information. The event is planned for May 9th and starts at 9am.
