The municipality of New Westminster is adding its support to a resolution passed by the Victoria City Council requesting the British Columbia government increase the budget for the local library.
The motion cites both rising costs and the value of public libraries to the province. New West Minster Mayor Cote wrote a letter to the Union of BC Municipalities and the provincial government supporting the call for greater funds. The Victoria resolution also described libraries as a “social justice equalizer” that helps to address poverty and increase access to education.
These days, the public library provides not just Books but also resources like DVDs, CDs, magazines and video games. Perhaps most crucially, they offer access to computers, the internet and printers for those who need it, and play host to more broad-reaching cultural events. These programs and events are often advertised through poster printing and flyer printing in public places.
New Westminster is well aware of both the value and the costs of the library system. The main branch of the municipality’s library re-opened in April after a five-week hiatus. The library relaunched with a celebration of National Poetry Month, which was held in April, as well as the announcement of a new Technology Lab, offering both help with common software and computer programming classes for kids.
