New West week to celebrate cycling

New Westminster will be participating in Metro Vancouver’s annual Go By Bike week, with a host of events and initiatives designed to encourage cycling.

Go By Bike week encourages Metro Vancouver residents to travel to work or other destinations by bicycle. Participants can track their rides online and join in teams with friends. There will be Celebration Stations set up across the metro area, which will offer free bicycle maintenance and information, as well as snacks and coffee during the mornings. Celebration locations in New Westminster include Royal Columbian Hospital and New Westminster Secondary School, the latter of which will feature free ice cream for students and music from the NWSS Jazz Quintet.

There will also be free online seminars hosted by the HUB Cycling Education team. Participants can answer to win prizes, including a trip for two to Croatia, Apparel, gift cards, and more. New Westminster will also be hosting a number of cycling events throughout the month, including a self-guided scavenger hunt running throughout June and multiple community bike rides. Many municipalities hold initiatives such as this, using tools such as brochure printing and special events to encourage citizens to stay active through bicycling or other physical activity.

Go By Bike week will take place in New Westminster and other Metro Vancouver municipalities between May 29 and June 4.
