The Shine Bright New West event has officially launched, marking two months of light displays and artistic events designed to light up the winter.
The centrepiece of Shine Bright New West is a series of light installations. These are placed at locations including uptown New Westminster, and the Queen’s Park rose garden. A “Winter Reflections” installment at Westminster Pier Park encourages contemplation and community gathering. Lights will also be placed at various locations downtown, including a setting of eco-art sculptures in Hyack Square. The sculptures are presented under the Reason for the Season project, with 12 sculptures of animals created by local artist Nickie Lewis to embody different values associated with the holidays.
In addition to the light displays, there are also a number of other events that take place throughout the city, including stage shows and educational events. The calendar in January includes several events meant to celebrate the Lunar New Year, including family workshops on cooking, sky lanterns and fortune cookies, and the annual tree-chipping event, which raises money for the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society. Holiday displays and other festive events take place across the world during this time of year, often marked by colourful banner printing and other decorations.
Shine Bright New West will run until January 31 throughout the city of New Westminster at various venues.
